The organisation

Founded in 1989 as a community-based, not for profit organisation, Realise Business (formerly known as the Business Enterprise Centre), delivers low cost business advisory and coaching services, workshops, webinars and online resource portals to small businesses and startups in Australia. Its mission is to assist and empower local businesses to grow and prosper.

Realise Business has been successful in winning various tenders for the delivery of free and subsidised advisory services on behalf of government, including the Federal Government’s Australian Small Business Advisory Services Program.  More recently, Realise Business was awarded the NSW Government’s Business Connect Program to provide free one-to-one business advice sessions, business advisory services, and training workshops to small businesses and disrupted industries across the Sydney area.

Realise Business is currently undergoing significant growth and consolidation of its service delivery in a much larger geographical area.

The role

Realise Business is seeking a Non-Executive Director to join its board who will:

  • Bring a passion for small business and a genuine commitment to advocate for an on behalf of members
  • Bring a high level of expertise in and understanding of governance
  • Have experience serving on a Board and Chairing committees
  • Have a deep understanding of how government works at both a State and Federal level; in addition to a broad government network to draw upon
  • Actively pursue access to valuable commercial networks to support the organisation’s strategies for future growth
  • Actively participate and engage with Members of the organisation
  • Commit four (4) hours per month in addition to board meetings
  • Serve on relevant Board Committees
  • Support and attend membership functions and act as an ambassador for the orgnanisation
  • Be available to service a minimum three (3) years as an elected Board member.

Experience, knowledge and skills

  • Successful senior management or Board level experience in an organisation of equivalent size and complexity with specialist knowledge in one of the following areas: ­

– Managerial or leadership responsibility
– ­Finance and accounting ­
– Governance, bringing strategic analysis, decision-making, risk and
– Performance management skills ­Commercial experience, bringing both government and private sector experience with a small business focus

  • Experience of strategic leadership of organisational change and culture in challenging economic and fiscal times
  • Confidence and motivation to improve the organisation’s quality of service and performance, and respond effectively to challenges
  • Commitment to the organisation’s values and behaviours and community-led service offerings
  • Demonstrated and genuine understanding of small business
  • Tertiary level qualifications or equivalent.
