The organisation
Founded in 1985, Canteen is renowned as one of Australia’s most respected non-profit organisations offering vital support to young people aged 12-25 dealing with cancer, whether in their own lives or within their families. Through a range of services, including educational resources, peer support groups, psychological aid, recreational activities, and leadership opportunities, Canteen equips young people with the tools to navigate the emotional, physical, and practical complexities of cancer. Canteen’s mission transcends support—it is a dynamic force empowering young people to develop the emotional strength they need to deal with cancer.
The role
The Executive Director of Operations (EDO) at Canteen plays a pivotal role in the organisation’s strategic growth and operational underpinning. As Canteen drives forward an ambitious five-year plan, the EDO will be at the forefront of strengthening the organisation’s operational backbone, ensuring strong financial and risk governance, enhancing organisational data and digital capability across all departments, and establishing highly effective performance tracking for the organisation.
This role is also pivotal in growing our shared services business model, which delivers high quality services to other not for profit organisations.
More broadly this role oversees the organisation’s finance, data and business systems, IT services, digital technology, shared services, risk and compliance, insurance, business planning, and performance tracking. Working closely with the executive team, the EDO will lead initiatives that align with Canteen’s mission, leveraging technology to provide innovative digital support options for young people, optimise business processes, boost performance, and achieve strategic objectives. With a national presence spanning state and territory capital cities, and two regional centres, the EDO also ensures consistent performance and collaboration across locations.
The ideal candidate for this position is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in operations for medium to large not for profit organisations. They must possess strong leadership, financial management, strategic planning, and technological expertise. As a key player in Canteen’s leadership, the EDO will contribute to executive decisions, represent Canteen in various forums, and assist in the organisation’s leadership. They’ll be data-driven, adept at leveraging technology, and able to build robust relationships with a broad range of stakeholders. This role demands a proactive approach, anticipating challenges, and implementing solutions while fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Personal alignment with Canteen’s values and a genuine desire to work with young people is essential.
