RSL NSW has been respecting, supporting and remembering NSW veterans and their families for over 100 years. The organisation was formed in 1917 and currently has 35,000 members in 350 sub-Branches throughout New South Wales. Incorporated under a NSW Act of Parliament, RSL NSW’s vision is to be recognised and respected as the pre-eminent association within the Defence Family in New South Wales.

Over the last two years, a new set of leaders at RSL NSW have taken enormous steps to transform the organisation and its culture. Based in new headquarters in George Street Sydney, RSL NSW is an entirely different organisation with professional staff, strong governance processes and finance systems. The RSL NSW team is fully focused – the Board, the members and staff – on getting back to their mission of helping veterans and their families in need and making sure they can help many more.
The organisation is now looking to appoint two new independent non-executive directors to the board. They are looking for applications from individuals who have an understanding and commitment to good governance and transparency. Successful candidates will be expected to have a strong understanding of corporate governance, coupled with current knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements. Active membership and graduates of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD) or Governance Institute will be highly regarded. Willingness to undertake this training and continuous governance, risk and relevant learning is a requirement of the role.
Board members will have a genuine interest and commitment to RSL NSW’s vision and purpose. Additionally, it is expected that they will occasionally attend public functions and make public statements as an advocate for RSL NSW.
It is estimated that the role of independent director may take approximately 10 – 15 hours per month and requires attendance at Board and Committee meetings held in ANZAC House in Sydney CBD. The RSL NSW Board meets 8 times a year (and additionally as required) and holds an annual three day Congress. All Board members are expected to participate in at least one Board Committee.
