  • Drive CANA’s strategic vision and operational excellence
  • Lead advocacy and empower Australia’s climate movement

The organisation

Climate Action Network Australia (CANA) is Australia’s largest network of organisations and individuals working together to achieve ambitious and equitable climate outcomes. Part of a wider global movement, the organisation connects and convenes Australia’s climate movement to build power through collaboration. CANA’s mission, with their members, is to work together to protect people from climate change and its impacts, to safeguard our natural environment, and to build a fairer and healthier Australia for everyone. The organisation has experienced rapid growth in recent years and is seeking their next CEO to consolidate and leverage from that growth.

The role

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CANA is responsible for providing visionary leadership, strategic direction, and operational excellence to drive the organisation’s mission of combating climate change. Reporting to the Board, the CEO oversees the implementation of strategic objectives, builds the network’s capacity and influence, and represents CANA in high-profile forums. Key responsibilities include developing and executing the strategic plan, ensuring robust governance and compliance, managing financial sustainability, and fostering an inclusive and high-performing organisational culture. Stakeholder engagement and management is a crucial part of the role.

The next CEO will have proven executive leadership experience in a membership-based, not-for-profit, or mission-driven organisation, and a demonstrated ability to implement strategic plans that deliver tangible outcomes. Strong governance understanding (experience reporting to a board), financial acumen, and a deep commitment to climate action with knowledge of Australia’s climate landscape are essential. The successful candidate will have a track record in stakeholder management and as a skilled communicator, adept at engaging with members, climate activists, and a wide span of civil society.
CANA’s talented and passionate team are spread across eastern seaboard cities and work on a hybrid/remote model – experience managing a geographically diverse workforce would be an advantage. National and international travel will be part of the role. Additionally, desirable qualifications include governance training (e.g. AICD) and experience within a CANA member organisation.
