The organisation

The Summer Foundation, founded in 2006 by Dr. Di Winkler, focuses on preventing young people from being forced into nursing homes by advocating for appropriate housing, support, and care services. The foundation conducts research, engages in advocacy efforts, and collaborates with cross-sector stakeholders to bring about systematic change. Summer Foundation also provides training and education to healthcare professionals and the community, emphasising the importance of tailored support and independent living solutions. Their work centres on creating sustainable changes that enable young people with disabilities to live fulfilling lives within their communities, fostering independence and social inclusion.

The opportunity

The role of a Non-Executive Director at the Summer Foundation is a crucial and multifaceted position requiring a commitment to the organisation’s values and purposes. Directors are expected to actively contribute to the effective governance of the organisation by fulfilling duties of care and diligence, acting in the best interests of Summer Foundation, and avoiding misuse of the position or confidential information. Key responsibilities include managing financial affairs responsibly, supporting human rights principles, and adhering to the Summer Foundation code of conduct.

The role also involves working collaboratively with other directors and management, serving on board committees, and dedicating sufficient time and energy to fulfill individual director duties. Candidates must possess service delivery experience in a human services context, solid governance experience in a disability setting, and a proven ability to contribute strategically. Moreover, candidates should have a strong business instinct, legal knowledge, and a genuine passion for the organisation’s social purpose. Compliance with legal and fiduciary responsibilities, as well as commitment to ethical conduct, independence, and prioritising organisational interests, are integral to the role.
