At People for Purpose, we believe that leadership quality is critical to creating greater social impact. Recently, Co-Founder, Rachael McLennan, joined Joe Stephan on the It’s Never About Money podcast to discuss leadership, philanthropy, and the growth of private giving in Australia.
As the conversation flowed, it turned towards what types of leadership styles are best suited for the not-for-profit sector. If you’re unfamiliar with the different types of leadership styles, you can read a great article on them here.
Rachael went on to highlight two styles in particular. “I think the two overwhelmingly relevant leadership styles for a chair are servant leader and empathetic visionary,” she explained. These approaches foster a culture of collaboration, trust, and purpose-driven decision-making – essential qualities for navigating the complexities of the for-purpose sector.
Rachael also delved into the challenges and opportunities faced by leaders in balancing commercial viability with participant needs, emphasising the value of mentorship and governance frameworks that align with organisational missions.
