The organisation

The Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) is a national charity working with some of Australia’s most marginalised communities to build language, literacy and communication skills.  For over 27 years, ALNF has delivered evidence-based programs with measurable impact in partnership with indigenous communities, refugees and migrants and people from other disadvantaged groups.   The need for language and literacy programs for the marginalised children and adults continues to grow.

ALNF’s flagship programs — including the Early Language and Literacy Development Initiative (ELLDI) and the Living First Languages Platform — are grounded in rigorous evidence and community-led design. With strong philanthropic backing and trusted cross-sector relationships, ALNF is entering an exciting new phase, with ambitions to expand its reach through digital innovation and potential international engagement.

The role

This is a pivotal leadership opportunity to build on ALNF’s strong founder-led legacy, guiding the organisation into its next phase of growth, scale and impact.

Reporting to the Board, the Chief Executive Officer will set and execute a clear, forward-looking strategy that enables sustainable growth and deepens impact. The CEO will lead a values-aligned team through a period of evolution, strengthening organisational capability, culture and performance.

A key priority will be to secure and grow diverse funding streams — maintaining strong existing relationships while building new partnerships across philanthropy, government and other sectors. The CEO will also represent ALNF as a credible and influential voice, strengthening its national profile and impact.

The role requires strong executive leadership capability, alongside the ability to provide strategic oversight of programs to ensure they remain high-quality, evidence-based and aligned to community need. Experience operating in complex environments, leading through ambiguity and driving outcomes at scale will be critical.

A deep commitment to purpose is essential, including a genuine respect for and capacity to work effectively with indigenous, refugee, migrant and other marginalised communities.
