The organisation
A Start in Life is an Australian charity dedicated to breaking barriers in education for over 100 years, ensuring that financial and social challenges do not limit a young person’s potential. The organisation provides tailored, long-term financial assistance to students from their first year of school through to completion of tertiary studies, covering essential educational costs. With a holistic support model, A Start in Life also offers mentoring and guidance to help students navigate their educational journey with confidence. Each year, the charity supports around 200 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, empowering them to achieve their academic goals and build a brighter future.
The role
A Start in Life is looking for a strategic and hands-on Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the organisation into its next chapter. This is an opportunity to shape the future of student support, driving strategy, leadership, and advocacy. The role involves leading a small team (running a small organisation), balancing governance, financial management, and operational excellence while serving as the external face of the charity. Key priorities include growing corporate donations, strengthening student outreach, and ensuring the continued impact of its programs.
The CEO will be a seasoned leader with extensive experience in the for-purpose sector, particularly in managing a small team. Candidates should have a strong background in governance, compliance, and risk management, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements. The role demands strong financial oversight and human resource management skills to effectively lead staff and volunteers. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills are necessary to advocate for the Charity, liaise with external bodies, and support the Executive Committee in decision-making and strategic planning. Additionally, background in education is crucial to align with the organisation’s mission and drive meaningful impact.
