Lead finance with purpose, driving financial fairness and strong governance for a trusted community organisation
- Strategic finance leadership with real community impact
- Trusted adviser to CEO and Board shaping strategy and risk
- Strengthen systems, reporting and team capability for the future
The organisation
Care Inc is a Canberra-based community service and the largest provider of financial counselling, microfinance and financial capability building in the ACT and region. Established in 1983, Care (and its Consumer Law program) delivers free, independent services while also contributing to systemic advocacy and law reform. The organisation is values-led, stable, growing and deeply committed to financial fairness for all.
The role
As Director of Finance, you will help steward Care Inc’s financial health and enable its mission to deliver financial fairness for people experiencing vulnerability. Reporting to the CEO under the general supervision of the Director of Operations, you will lead Care’s finance, audit and payroll operations and contribute as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.
Working closely with the CEO, you will strengthen the organisation’s financial reporting, budgeting and grant acquittals, providing clear, timely and credible insights that support executive decisions and Board reporting. You will be hands-on where needed, while also lifting capability; improving systems, processes and controls so they remain fit-for-purpose as Care’s services and complexity continue to grow.
This is an opportunity for a capable finance leader who is ready to step up. Broadening from strong operational oversight into executive-level influence, governance exposure and organisation-wide improvement.
Candidate Profile
Care is seeking a values-aligned Director of Finance to play a pivotal leadership role at a time of organisational transition and opportunity. This role will suit a finance leader who operates confidently across both detail and strategy. You will strengthen financial governance, partner closely with the Director of Operations, CEO and Board, and help shape the next phase of Care’s financial capability in service of financial fairness for the ACT community.
You will specifically bring:
- Sound finance fundamentals: confident with budgeting, financial reporting, compliance, audit, grants and governance.
- Systems and improvement mindset: strong practical systems capability, with the ability to assess what’s working and pragmatically improve financial tools, processes, and controls (including Xero or similar).
- Board-level capability: ability to prepare and contribute to Board financial reporting, including variance analysis and decision-ready insights
- Audit leadership: confidence managing audit processes, including preparing financial statements and liaising directly with auditors
- Compliance: strong working knowledge of ATO, ABR and ACNC obligations, with disciplined record-keeping and reconciliations
- People leadership potential: ability to supervise, mentor and develop a small team, contributing to a positive, service-oriented culture
- Judgement and presence: brings sound judgement, positive energy and leadership presence, able to pivot across competing priorities while maintaining accuracy, accountability and trust
This role will suit someone motivated by purposeful work and excited by the opportunity to lift the finance function, and grow their executive capability in a highly respected, mission-led organisation.
Care recognises the importance of flexibility in supporting sustainable leadership. While this is a senior role with significant responsibility, flexible working arrangements may be considered for the right candidate.
