 The organisation

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is Australia’s peak membership body for doctors and medical students, providing national leadership in health policy, advocacy and professional support for more than 60 years. The AMA Group includes the Federal AMA, State and Territory AMA Branches and Group entities such as AMPCo, Drs4Drs, and the Indigenous Medical Scholarship Fund and Foundation. As a federated organisation, the AMA works with independent State AMA entities in a conjoint membership arrangement.

The AMA is currently advancing major organisational initiatives under its 2024–2027 Strategy, including digital transformation, strengthened member engagement, federation reform and recent structural mergers. This period of change requires governance leaders who can bring clarity, strategic insight and independent perspective to support the AMA’s continued renewal and national impact.

The opportunity

The AMA is seeking an experienced governance and risk professional to Chair its Audit, Risk and Performance Committee. This role provides strategic oversight of enterprise risk, internal audit, compliance and organisational performance within a complex, federated environment. The Chair will bring clarity, proportionality and strong governance leadership as the AMA navigates digital transformation, structural reforms and emerging organisational risks.

The successful candidate will bring:

  • Extensive experience in enterprise risk management, assurance, controls and organisational oversight
  • Strong governance capability with prior board or committee leadership
  • Ability to prioritise emerging risks and right-size frameworks in a multi-entity context
  • A calm, pragmatic and advisory style that supports clarity and effective decision-making
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with management, auditors and clinical Board members
  • High integrity, independence of thought and commitment to AMA’s mission and values
