Guide strategy and strengthen governance at Australia’s peak medical body, contributing independent insight to enhance member value and impact.
- Provide independent oversight on member value and strategy.
- Join a remunerated Board shaping Australia’s health future
- Strengthen governance across a complex national federation.
The organisation
The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is Australia’s peak membership body for doctors and medical students, providing national leadership in health policy, advocacy and professional support for more than 60 years. The AMA Group includes the Federal AMA, State and Territory AMA Branches and Group entities such as AMPCo, Drs4Drs, and the Indigenous Medical Scholarship Fund and Foundation. As a federated organisation, the AMA works with independent State AMA entities in a conjoint membership arrangement.
The AMA is currently advancing major organisational initiatives under its 2024–2027 Strategy, including digital transformation, strengthened member engagement, federation reform and recent structural mergers. This period of change requires governance leaders who can bring clarity, strategic insight and independent perspective to support the AMA’s continued renewal and national impact.
The opportunity
The AMA Board is seeking a non-medical Independent Director who can bring expertise in member acquisition and engagement, modern commercial practice, and strategic insight to strengthen the Board’s capability in an evolving federation.
This role is being introduced following constitutional reform and represents a critical addition to the Board. The AMA requires a Director who can contribute actively from their first meeting, offering informed perspectives rooted in modern membership strategy and organisational value creation.
The successful candidate will bring:
- A proven track record in growing membership within associations, professional bodies, peak organisations or similar
- Deep understanding of membership value propositions, engagement levers and contemporary acquisition strategies
- Experience working alongside management on digital engagement and data-enabled member insights
- Strong governance capability with the confidence to contribute early and meaningfully
- Ability to work constructively with a Board predominantly comprised of clinicians
- Strategic thinking, commercial acumen, sound judgement and a collaborative mindset
- Commitment to AMA’s mission, ethics and organisational purpose
This Director will play a central role in supporting AMA’s strategic objectives, ensuring member value remains core to organisational decision-making, and contributing to governance across a diverse Group structure.
