A charity meeting urgent community needs
For more than 30 years, Coast Shelter has been a constant presence on the NSW Central Coast, delivering services to people experiencing homelessness and domestic violence. From emergency accommodation and transitional housing to counselling, advocacy, and community outreach, Coast Shelter plays a vital role in breaking the cycle of poverty and disadvantage.
A rare request: whole-of-board renewal
With demand for services rising and a new strategy in place, Coast Shelter recognised the need for a bold governance reset. Newly appointed Chair Paul Murnane AM, a corporate adviser and company director with extensive not-for-profit leadership experience, approached People for Purpose with an unusual request: to refresh the organisation’s entire board.
Designing governance with strategy in mind
Working closely with Paul, CEO Lee Shearer APM, and Company Secretary Lyndelle Taylor GAICD, we designed a board composition strategy that went beyond compliance. Our focus was on creating a team aligned not only by skills and experience but also by connectivity to the cause, lived perspective, and shared values.
Seven new directors, one united team
The result was the appointment of seven new non-executive directors from the Central Coast and surrounding regions. Each director brings expertise and a genuine commitment to Coast Shelter’s mission. Together with the Chair, CEO, and Company Secretary, they form a strong and united board equipped to govern strategically, influence systemic change, and support frontline services.
Setting the organisation up for its next chapter
Whole-of-board renewal is rare in the for-purpose sector, but for Coast Shelter it has been transformative.
Chair Paul Murnane said, “Coast Shelter has been a constant in our community for more than 30 years, delivering services to those who need them most. I have been inspired by the dedication of our staff and look forward to working with the leadership team to ensure the continued growth and longevity of Coast Shelter in our community.”
Partnering for purpose
At People for Purpose, we are proud to have partnered with Coast Shelter in this period of renewal. By aligning governance with strategy and values, the organisation is now positioned to expand its reach, strengthen its advocacy, and continue providing vital services to the Central Coast community.
