Our Brief

Coast Shelter is one of the Central Coast’s leading community organisations, supporting people experiencing homelessness, domestic and family violence, and social disadvantage through a broad range of essential services.
As the organisation entered a new phase of growth and renewal, the Board recognised the importance of strengthening governance capability and ensuring the organisation was well positioned for long-term sustainability and impact.

People for Purpose was engaged to support a significant board renewal process over a two-and-a-half-year period, helping to appoint seven Board Directors and contribute to the evolution of the organisation’s governance and leadership foundations.

The Placements

Working closely with Coast Shelter’s Chair and leadership team, we supported the appointment of seven new Directors across a range of governance, financial, operational and strategic disciplines.

The focus was on building a values-aligned board with the right mix of skills, perspectives and leadership capability to support the organisation through an important period of transition and organisational development.

Alongside the board renewal process, Coast Shelter also undertook broader organisational transformation, including leadership transition, operational improvements and cultural renewal.

The Impact

Over the past two years, Coast Shelter has successfully strengthened its governance and organisational foundations while continuing to deliver critical services to the community.

The organisation has:

  • strengthened governance, risk management and financial oversight
  • renewed government funding agreements for a five-year term
  • restored positive operating performance and strong cash flow
  • improved financial reserves and balance sheet strength
  • completed a significant organisational restructuring and stabilisation process
  • continued building a positive and sustainable organisational culture

Chair Paul Murnane AM reflected on the journey:

“An important part of all this was People for Purpose’s contribution. Over two years we successfully completed our restructuring, including a full new Board, new CEO, operational overhaul and continuing culture rebuild.”

The strengthened Board has played an important role in helping Coast Shelter move confidently into its next phase, supporting both organisational stability and long-term strategic direction.

Looking Ahead

With a renewed Board, strengthened leadership foundations and improved financial sustainability, Coast Shelter is well positioned for the future.

The organisation now enters its next chapter with greater stability, stronger governance capability and a clear pathway to continue expanding its impact across the Central Coast community.

This partnership reflects the important role governance and leadership play in enabling organisations to grow, adapt and deliver lasting social impact.
