The organisation

Founded in 1863, Newington College (Newington) has grown to become one of Sydney’s oldest and internationally respected schools with a strong academic program, good pastoral care, a wealth of opportunities for the students and vibrant staff, parent and old boy communities.

Newington’s governance is overseen by Council, its governing body, which is responsible for the College’s general direction and is dedicated to ensuring diversity of religion, ethnicity, capability and socio-economic means within its community.

Following a strategic review in 2019, Newington is entering a significant period of change and growth.  The College has sought to identify key challenges for students in the future and has determined that it must refocus on both the way education is done at Newington and the culture in which the education happens.  In consultation with parents, students, alumni and education experts, Newington is currently considering various long term strategic issues including size of school, campus structure and co-education. This is alongside an on-going strategy to maintain its cultural diversity and to enhance socio-economic diversity. Concurrently, the College’s Council is entering a phase of renewal and has two lay positions now available for individuals who are committed to shaping the future strategic direction of the College.

The role

Newington College Council is seeking outstanding candidates with excellence in strategic leadership in education who will offer a “fresh eyes” approach, and will complement and strengthen the Council’s existing skills and knowledge base.  Council members will be committed to shaping the future direction of the College, its long-term diversity and inclusiveness as well as its structure, size and make-up.  Candidates will be creative, forward thinkers with a keen “outward looking” approach to the education landscape.  They will have demonstrated board experience, a commitment to good governance and a genuine interest in positively contributing to Newington College Council.

Experience, knowledge & skills

The Newington College Council are looking for individuals who bring experience in any of the following areas:

  • Deep and broad experience in the management of multimillion dollar revenue lines, assets management and investment opportunities and capital works projects; or
  • Educational leadership experience, specifically a senior role in a large secondary institution; or
  • Experience in the area of health and wellbeing / pastoral care / human psychology.

In addition, the Council is looking for members who bring:

  • Marketing / communication / stakeholder engagement at the highest level.
  • Experience in IT / digital / cyber security.
  • Valuable networks within the Australian business community, and / or NSW Government.
